CCTV Training
Another impressive course that GSS offers is CCTV Training. Public Space Surveillance on Closed-Circuit TV is part of security training courses available. It is one of the qualifications linked to obtaining an SIA (Security Industry Association) license. The duration of this course is only 32 hours. The course that GSS offers is SIA approved, which is excellent when matching it up with another course pertaining to security work. The training involves covering the work from two modules and passing two exams. It goes hand-in-hand with Door Supervisor Training or First Aid at Work training. The more that is studied, the higher up the ladder in security a person can go.
When looking over the course, the studies and training involves learning about the private security industry and being aware of the law within the industry, fire safety awareness, emergency procedures and communications skills and customer care. This part of the study is basically core learning to obtain knowledge about the security industry.
The second module or part of this course includes an introduction to the ‘roles and responsibilities of the CCTV operator and other CCTV staff’, codes of practice, guidelines and operational procedures. Closed-circuit television (CCTV) equipment and its operation is covered; very interesting learning about closed-circuit TV, with all the screens that watch different areas within the perimeters of the job site.
Studying about the control room, accessing control and control room communications, as well as CCTV surveillance techniques, with hands-on training would answer many questions about what goes on behind the scenes.
Learning how to deal with incidents would be interesting, especially if it involves role-playing. When any emergency takes place, there is always a system to follow and the course deals with emergency procedures in the CCTV control room as well. Finally, health and safety at work is taught. Safety is always important to learn about; the more you know, the more foresight you have and what to watch for in order to keep things safe in the CCTV environment.
The SIA (Security Industry Association) has specific standards and qualifications in place that must be met, before someone is able to obtain a license. It is their responsibility for any future development of core competency specifications. When SIA issues identification once the license is given, the issuance is based upon probity (integrity or strict code of ethics), competency and identification (must wear identification badge for private security in public viewing). GSS offers SIA approved courses, which is good to know.
It is a course choice that involves serious consideration prior to signing up because there is a lot more to it than just putting on a uniform and looking important to the public. The CCTV course comes with a Level 2 certificate when it is successfully completed.
As equipment and technology changes, so will the level of knowledge, so training must remain current. Refresher courses (when the license expires or is about to expire) will involve further updating in training. This is standard for any job that involves security in the private or public sectors.
The SIA badge must be visible to all because it shows the public that the wearer is qualified security personnel. The only exception to the rule pertains to those in security who are under covert licensing. Also, CCTV or Public Space Surveillance personnel do not have to wear the SIA badge consistently, according to SIA regulations, as this position is considered non-frontline security personnel.
However, in the event of a security issue, where their credentials may be questioned, wearing the SIA badge would validate that they are qualified, licensed security professionals. CCTV training that GSS offers is something to keep an ‘eye’ on and speak to a guidance counselor if you have any questions about the course.
Level 2 Award in CCTV Operations (Public Space Surveillance)
Under the Private Security Industry Authority Act 2001, all individuals wishing to work in the private security industry must undertake a recognised qualification before applying for a licence.
The Level 2 Award in CCTV Operations (Public Space Surveillance) has been developed to meet the requirements of the Security Industry Authority (SIA). It is based on the relevant SIA ‘Specifications for Learning and Qualifications for CCTV Control Room Operators (PSS)’ and provides the necessary skills and knowledge for those who wish to apply for an SIA licence and work as a CCTV Operative.
The qualification comprises 3 mandatory units:
Unit 1 – Working in the Private Security Industry
Unit 2 – Working as a CCTV Operator
Unit 3 – Practical operation of CCTV equipment
This qualification can enable the learner to progress onto the NVQ in Providing Security Services or undertake further learning in other areas of the private security industry such as Security Guarding or Door Supervision.
