Certificate to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector
If you are working as an associate teacher and do not have any recognized qualification you would do well to get a Certificate in Teaching In the Lifelong Learning Sector or CTLLS. This certificate does need access to 30 hours of teaching practice in a recognized location imparting lifelong education. During such training you will learn the practice and theory of teaching, the principles that make up evaluation, assessment, teaching and learning. It will also help you to develop interpersonal and communication skills that can help to boost confidence. You will also be brought on par with the responsibilities that go with such a professional role.
The CTLLS requires that you go to a training provider like GSS who will provide the necessary practical sessions, enable participating in group discussions or give you assignments meant to judge capabilities. The theory of teaching will be imparted and the assessments will help you to demonstrate whether you have acquired the practical skills that are referred to in the theory. There will also be 30 hours of teaching to be practiced, while the portfolio of evidence will come from the assessments, the practical and written exams. The learning hours that are needed to be spent with the training provider will be about 120 hours, though this can vary from provider to provider. You can also spend these learning hours on your own but this will need to be properly authenticated and assessments will definitely pick up any lacunae.
Once a person has a CTLLS qualification he or she can work as an associate teacher in community and adult education, work based learning or as a support staff member in a learning institution. It also allows you to go to the next step of ATLS status which can further your career. This requires joining professional bodies. A full teacher status can come from a Level 5 diploma. A PTLLS qualification is a must for entry to a CTLLS training course and automatically gives 6 credits to the candidate.
During training program sessions there will be a number of activities and group discussions. There will be presentations made by the trainers and simulations that will indicate the broad approaches made to teaching. Specific case studies will be taken up and workshops arranged on various topics. During the course the student will have to also complete a lot of reading and do research on subjects assigned. There will be role-playing that can help the teaching process and micro-teaching is part of the course. The mandatory units which will decide the necessary credits involve preparation in teaching, enabling and planning learning and learning how to make proper assessments and the principles involved in this. 24 credits are necessary to obtain the CTLLS qualification. The units above will go towards the credits besides the basic PTLLS qualification.
The 30 hours of teaching that is mandatory for this qualification will be observed by the trainers for at least three hours to make sure that you have the right aptitude for teaching. Practical sessions do count as part of this teaching and the other hours have to be properly documented in such a way that they can be independently verified. Theory assignments can require you do research the points assigned and then to deliver a 15 minute lecture detailing these points. These do not count towards the teaching hours. Each unit requires one theory assignment and one practical assignment to be completed and it is also possible for a learner to take on optional units which have to be completed to a certain level.
CTLLS is recommended for teachers, trainers and tutors who are into lifelong learning or community and adult education. It can also be useful to trainers in commercial and industrial organizations, technicians and other support staff in education and part-time teachers.
