GSS offers training for careers that students want after graduation, or will go on to college or university for, in order to further learning and training. One career that is available in the course selection is Door Supervisor Training, which was what the interest is in … to be a door supervisor/security guard. The GSS website shows the course outline for each grade level, which makes it easy to know what you will be taking at what time of day. Looking up the position on the internet, a security guard or door supervisor has to have a SIA (Securities Industrial Association) license, front-line staff only and that means training to the right level.
There are training modules that have to be attended and taken, plus there are three examinations to take and that is only one qualification towards obtaining a door supervisor license. You never really know what a career involves until an interest in a certain job begins your research. For example, people think that to be a security guard or a door supervisor, you just need to know how to greet people and how to spot the bad guys, but there is much more to it.
Upon further investigation (pun unavoidable), a door supervisor or security guard has to know some pretty serious things. The course involves being aware of and learning about the law in the private security industry, health and safety for the private security operative (bodyguard, security guard, door supervisor) and fire safety. Emergency procedures, the private security industry and communications skills and customer care are also part of the training.
Communication skills (the ability to communicate effectively to produce positive results) and customer care (quality security service to customers or people) are imperative in the job. To think that being a door supervisor or security guard just meant good skills in communicating to people and keeping the ‘bad guys’ out! This course also teaches WHMIS (Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System), which you would need to know about, if something happened at the place you were at and the ‘door supervisor’ was called in to the area where the hazardous material may be exposed to the public, or an injury to someone has occurred.
It gets even better; very interesting! The next module in the training covers subjects like: behavioral standards, civil and criminal law, searches and arrest. So, there is an introduction to criminal law, the powers of arrest, legal and illegal searches, making an arrest, use of force and common offences. Door supervisor training will also touch upon fire safety and fire extinguishers, access control and alarm systems, bomb threats, evacuation – yes, there is more to it than just greeting people and guarding a door.
Drug awareness, recording incidents, crime preservation, avoiding conflict while reducing personal risk, the list continues on and you begin to see how interesting it is. The next time a ‘door man’ is seen, all of this information will come rushing back to remembrance. The training goes on into defusing conflict, how to resolve and learn from conflict, applying communication skill and conflict management.
Lastly, but certainly not least; the training goes into learning about and practicing physical intervention techniques, such as disengagement and escorting techniques. There will be approximately 38 hours in-class training, but also about 29 hours of ‘contact’ time, which is hands-on training. That is certainly one jam-packed training course and that is only one level of it, which involves taking three exams.
Talking with a guidance counselor at GSS can answer any questions about the course. There is one thing that is understood better after checking out Door Supervisor Training. The next time a door supervisor or security guard is seen, it will be understood that he is more than just a fancy greeter wearing a uniform.
