What are the qualifications about?
You can get ahead in work, education or daily life by building your English, Mathematics and ICT skills with the Functional Skills qualifications.
These qualifications are offered at many levels, letting you learn anything from the very basics to more advanced skills.
Who are they for?
The Functional Skills qualifications are for anyone who wants to develop their English, maths or ICT skills.
You don’t need any prior qualifications. You might be a young learner (14-19 years old) or an adult.
Course Content
- understand and use whole numbers and understand negative numbers in practical contexts
- add, subtract, multiply and divide whole numbers using a range of strategies
- understand and use equivalences between common fractions, decimals andpercentages
- add and subtract decimals up to two decimal places
- solve simple problems involving ratio, where one number is a multiple of theother
- use simple formulae expressed in words for one- or two-step operations
- solve problems requiring calculation, with common measures, including money,time, length, weight, capacity and temperature
- convert units of measure in the same system
- work out areas and perimeters in practical situations
- construct geometric diagrams, models and shapes
- extract and interpret information from tables, diagrams, charts and graphs
- collect and record discrete data and organise and represent information indifferent ways
- find mean and range
- use data to assess the likelihood of an outcome.
Which option is right for me?
Entry Level 1:
You’d like to start with the basics by familiarising yourself with the language and tools involved, and by learning to solve short, simple problems.
Entry Level 2:
You have a bit of background knowledge or a qualification at Entry Level 1. You’d like to start building your skills by learning to solve straightforward problems in familiar contexts.
Entry Level 3:
You have some background knowledge in your chosen subject area but feel you need a little more support or guidance before moving on to Level 1.
Level 1:
You’re familiar with the basics and are ready to start using more creativity in your maths problem solving, ITC use or English.
Level 2:
You have some knowledge and basic skills and are ready to handle more complex problems, often involving unfamiliar contexts. You’d like to learn how to express, understand or apply more advanced concepts or ideas.
