Security apprenticeships are an important part of security training. Whether you are interested in becoming a retail security guard, or you are interested in a more specialized position that involves work as a dog handler or private investigator, you will have to take a number of steps to get your license. These steps include courses and classwork, as well as a hands-on apprenticeship. The apprenticeship will give you the opportunity to work under the supervision of certified professionals, and to put your newly-learned skills to action in a real life environment.
Benefits of the Security Profession
There are a number of benefits to undertaking security apprenticeships and starting a career in security. During these slow economic times, the security profession is one of the few industries that is actually growing. This is due to a number of factors, including increased crime rates. Today, there are 500 000 people working in security, and that number is continuing to rise. Security jobs are varied and can include everything from being a guard at a retail store to patrolling a car lot to running a CCTV system. While some security staff are independent contractors, others work for an organization as part of a large group of security staff.
Depending on the job you take, working in security can have a number of additional benefits. Some employers offer salaried pay or insurance benefits. Many professionals appreciate the security industry for its flexible schedule. It is possible to find work at all hours of the day. There are numerous jobs available in the traditional nine-to-five slot. If you are attending school, however, or need to care for a family during the day, there are also numerous night security jobs available.
Entering the Security Industry
Once you have decided that you want to start a career in security, there are a number of steps you must take. The first step is to consider the different types of security jobs that are out there and decide which you are most suited for. Consider factors such as your physical limitations, and the hours you would like to work. If you cannot stand for a long period of time, for example, a retail security guard position may not work well for you. If you cannot leave your children alone all night, a night patrol job may not be your best choice. Different types of security positions require different training and different security apprenticeships, so it is important to know what job you want before you begin training.
GSS offers a number of basic training options that can help get you your security license and will make you more attractive to employers. As with most trade licenses, you must complete several classes of basic training, as well as a number of hours of security apprenticeships. Most employers will also offer minimal on-site training, but this will not usually contribute to your license. Although you are not required to have a license for many positions, licensed security professionals generally receive higher pay and have access to more jobs. Because many employers prefer that their security staff are licensed, they may be willing to pay for some, or all, of your training.
Security apprenticeships have a number of benefits in addition to the experience they provide. Many people find that their employer during apprenticeship wants to keep them on after their apprenticeship is complete. In fact, most licensed security officers get their first job at the place where they did their apprenticeship. By taking courses and security apprenticeships through GSS, you can obtain your license quickly and easily. You may find that getting a security job is much easier than you think.
